I've been wanting to eat healthier for some time now. Some consideration has been given to vegetarian, vegan, or just cutting out some foods. Then I seen this cookbook on the Blogging for Books site and I thought I would read it to get some insight. Power Plates is my first vegan cookbook and it's a lot to take in. Author Gena Hamshaw did a really good job of explaining the ins and outs. I'm glad I chose this book because she has some experience in eating healthy.

She is author of the Full Helping blog and two other cookbooks; Choosing Raw and Food52 Vegan. Hamshaw has also written articles in publications like self magazine.
This cookbook has the nicest illustrations, easy to follow recipes, and a excellent introduction. It's one of the most complete vegan cookbooks that I have ever seen. Just the thought of one hundred meals in six categories: breakfast, salads, soups, bowls, bakes, skillet and stove top. Hamshaw discusses how to cook and prepare ingredients in detail. Which is very good for someone like me who doesn't cook or eat vegan, but is interested in learning about this way of cooking.
I would recommend this book to anyone just learning to cook vegan. It would make a perfect gift also. The price 24.99 isn't too bad either.

Journaling is my new pastime. I watch Youtube videos all the time. This is my first time coming across a journal that covers 5 years. Every year for 5 years you will answer the same question. It's not a big book in length. You've already guessed it has 365 pages. So there's 365 questions and in 5 years there will be 1,825 answers.
The one problem I have with this journal is, will someone really keep answering these same questions for 5 years. I probably won't but if you know someone who will; it would make a nice gift. It's a different and unique way to journal. A nice way to track your spiritual growth.
My copy is hard cover. The cost isn't too bad $14.99 in the US and $19.00 in Canada.
When God Made You is a beautifully written children's book by Matthew Paul Turner. It's a wonderful portrayal of God's love for us. Using rhyme to describe what God was thinking about when He created us. A question that all children are sure to ask at some time or another. Turner incorporates all the attributes used in the bible such as: love one another, talents, gift, etc, The book is very uplifting. It doesn't have many words. What really holds your attention is the very well done illustrations by David Catrow. Just as most children's books it isn't long, doesn't use a lot of words. It's a book your little one's will want to read over and over. It's the perfect gift for any occasion.

I had the hardest time getting into this book. The subject is very interesting and Sharon Lisa Harper tackles a subject that most atheist use against Christians. Where is your God when there is so much suffering in the world. I would recommend this book to anyone who has asked this question. My reply is always what are you doing to make this world a better place. Have you told anyone about Jesus?

I received this book free from Waterproof Publishing Group. I think the 4x4 Diet profoundly a good source to start an exercise and diet program . It emphasizes 4 key food, 4 minute workouts, and four weeks to the body you want. What more could you ask for. Healthy Fats, Low-Cholesterol Cookbook is the 5th edition and a revised and updated version of American Heart Association Low-fat, low-cholesterol cookbook. I was really impressed to learn that contributions to the American Heart Association help with gathering research for publications like this.

Recently my mother has developed some problems with her heart. Before that I was looking at different ways I could eat a lot more healthier. Now I'm really seeking knowledge and recipes. In my journey for cookbooks I found Healthy Fats. It consists of 200 recipes, 50 of them are new editions. This is more then a cookbook; it's a manuel on healthy living. It's loaded with information to aid in reducing your risk for heart disease or stroke. In the appendix you will find ideas for shopping, cooking, dining out, and warning signs for heart disease and stroke. There's even ideas on how to stock your pantry.

About the recipes. I found some really good ideas. I've always wanted a grilled pizza. On page 212 there it is, Grilled Pizza with Grilled Vegetables. Chili on page 200. Meatloaf with Apricot sauce on page 192. These are just a few examples of delicious recipes listed. I wish there were some pictures of the dishes. The only picture is on the cover of the book.

This cookbook is a must for anyone suffering from heart disease. I now look for items with the American Heart Association label, when I go grocery shopping. It's a red heart with a white checkmark. These foods meet the nutritional requirements for healthy heart eating. No more super-size or all you can eat buffets for me. Portion control is a must in healthy eating.

Twenty Dinners is a collection of recipes from photographer Ithai Schori and Musician Chris Taylor. This is not your average cookbook, neither is it meant to be. Your average cookbook produces recipes to be followed. The key component to these recipes is to teach the reader how to build a foundation of what they like. These recipes are meant to be reconstructed and added to according to your palette. I really liked the idea of people cooking together, instead of someone slaving over the stove and ignoring their guest. So the party is centered around the cooking. Schori and Taylor aren't into desserts so much so they used guest pastry chef Lillie O'Brien. O'Brien is famous for her jams. Which was the inspiration for her successful business, London Borough of Jam.

In the table of contents, I noticed the recipes were divided into four categories: fall, winter, spring, summer with 5 dinners each complete with tips and what cocktail would be best. I don't drink so I would substitute a flavored sparkling water. These are very unconventional dinner parties that don't start at any particular time and the food may not be spread out like you are use to it being. In the back there are two glossaries. The first one is techniques, terms, and handy advice. The second one is tools, pantry, and shopping for ingredients. I really like this book. I would buy it just for the tips in the back.

Cartoon Network and Chelsea Bloxsom have penned a book of DIY craft projects inspired by the Cartoon Network show Adventure Time. This collaboration of crafts desiged by the fans of the show, are the cutest crafts representing the land of OOO and it's characters: Marceline, Jake, and Gunter, just to name a few. Some of the projects range from easy to the more advanced. Like the bubblegum's like-like sweater, which you embellish a sweater that has already been made. The crafts range from earrings, bracelets, puppets complete with DIY stage, hats, nail art, etc. Each project comes with an introduction, list of items you will need, and steps complete with pictures. The book consists of four chapters: Total Toytopia, Bling-A-Ding-Ding, Rhombus Home Decor, and Geek Chic Fashion, with such eye-catching sub titles as: Shrink-a-Cow-Tastic Earrings,Oh my Glob, Nail Art.

In the back of the book you will find templates of the various projects and an index. What I like about this book is the crafts can be implemented by young as well as older crafters. They are very professional looking and it consists of something that someone would actually do. Like the bracelet and earrings. I would recommend this book to crafters of small child and to libraries. A little bit about the author. Chelsea Bloxsom is a native of Boston. She is the founder of Love and Sandwich, where she makes plush stuff toys and embroidery hoops show casing characters from movies and shows.

A Table by the Window is a very uplifting story about family, romance, and life. It is listed under Christian Fiction, but without any reference to scripture. The protagonist in the story is Juliette D'Alisa a food writer living in Portland, Oregon. Juliette had grown up in the food business. Her heritage a mixture of French and Italian spoke for itself; parents were proud owners a successful restaurant all of her life. That's where her heart really is, but she got side tract after working with her brother in his restaurant and falling in love with his sous chef. Even though working as a food writer wasn't Juliette's first love it paid the bills.

The story starts with the passing of Juliette's grandmother who came from France after the passing of her husband. She opened a pastry shop. Juliette inherited the work table still inhabiting the contents in the drawers. Inside one of the draws she found a photo in a cookbook that looked very much like her brother. The family resemblance was so close it put her on an investigation of who this man might be.

In the mist of all this, she knows her family would love to see her with someone and she started to feel lonely. This leads her to an online dating service. Something she would have never thought of using, but she ends up meeting Neil, a physician who specializes in immunology and lives in Memphis. Long distant love doesn't really work for Juliette, but after meeting Neil she decides to give it a try. Plus the timing is perfect, because her mother has been diagnosed with cancer. Not just that' but her brother has decided to try his hand at another restaurant business and would like for her to quit her job and join him.

I really liked this book because it's morally written just right for a christian reader. Neil comes to visit Juliette; he stays at his place, she stays at hers. The book also has some nice recipes: French Chocolate Cake, Simple Roast Chicken, etc. I can see myself actually using these recipes. I love to cook so it's one of my favorite Christian Fiction's.

A Stillness of Chimes, takes place in the small town of Prospect, Georgia. It's history can be attributed to moonshiners and holy rollers; there is also that haunting past of stalkers and the annual Blue Grass festival. Does this give you an idea of what the story is about? Meg Moseley was obviously inspired by the stories centered around small town southern living. Prospect is a place where everyone knows each others business, yet, everyone feels like family whether they are related or not.

The story is centered around, protagonist, Laura Gantt- a mixture between tom boy and feminism- and her three friends: Sean Halloran, Cassie Bright, and her little sister Tigger. The four of them made a pack during their childhood years to always be there for each other no matter what. Eighteen years later, the death of Laura's mother brings the group back together. During this time stories began to surface about Laura's father faking his death ten years earlier. Some people believe the stories, while others choose to ignore, or keep quiet about it. All of this reunites the old flame between Laura Gantt and Sean Halloran. Laura's father Elliott Gantt-a veteran- had been like a father to Sean. Sean had been a victim of abuse by his father, who ends up in jail. Cassie and Tigger have gotten married and they are also dealing with a mother that is out of character; they can't understand why. A lot of secrets and memories surface between friends and family as they work to uncover the truth about Laura's dad being alive.

I like this story because number one it's christian based. Moseley intertwines her characters beautifully as she deals with subjects such as: OCD, death, spousal and child abuse, marriage affairs, marriage life, young love, small town and family life. Without giving away the whole story this is a must read.

A little bit about the author. Meg Moseley now resides in Georgia with her family; she has lived in many other cities and considers herself a Californian. She is a lover of fiction whether she's reading or writing it. She writes for the Altanta Journal-Constitution in the suburban edition.

The inspiration for this book came
when Teresa Tomeo was shopping one day and heard two ladies talking about a
list of things they would like to do.
She had seen the movie Bucket List and had reached a high level of
success in her life. In the mist
of her success she had almost lost everything. To top it all off she had put
her career in front of her relationship with God and her marriage. After being
let go from her job in the media after twenty years, and not understanding why:
she began to do some soul searching.
She thought what if, God had a bucket list consisting of the way he
wanted us to live before we die.

This book is based on that what if
question. It is about her and her struggles as she tries to figure out what God
may want for her before she dies.
She uses her gift for story telling to explore this notion of God’s
Bucket List. She explains that she
did have a list in life of things she wanted to achieve and she was pretty
successful with all of it. While
gaining everything on this list she almost lost everything that mattered to
her. After losing her job she had
a lot of time on her hands. During this time her husband had gone back to
church, and God use him to reach Tomeo.
She began to realize that God already designed a bucket list that was
individually unique, but the same plan for everyone. She learned this meant putting God first. Tomeo discovered that God does
have the whole world in his hands and wants to give it to us, but it would to be
on his terms. Once all of this is realized
we can enter into God’s bucket list. In this book Tomeo tries to picture how God would apply
such a list.

When I started this blog, my first thought for a title was, In My Silent Retreat. As time went on I discovered that, although, a lot of things take place in a silent retreat with Jesus; if he had not done what he did on the cross I would not be doing what I'm doing. At first I used the image, Jesus Paid it All, but it never occurred to me that it would be the title of my blog.

Last Easter I spent a lot of time thinking about Jesus carrying the cross, and what kind of love that must be. The only thing that keeps coming to mind is a soldier, fighting a war for his country. Then God gave it to me. We are all soldiers: fighting for our souls. God gives us a freedom, and when we turn to him Satan is always trying us. At first I didn't know how to fight. I was a baby christian. It came to me, Jesus already paid. I just need to hang out with him.

This last month I celebrated his birthday early. Everyday I posted something concerning Mary. From her visitation with the angle Gabriel to the birth of Jesus. I learned something from Mary. Patience is important when giving birth to something. Regardless of what people say about you, stay loyal to God. Mary knew she was giving birth to the one who would one day walk mankind through all obstacles. So when I'm giving birth to something I hang out with the one who paid it all. He gets me through it.
I didn't recieve a lot of gifts. I did recieve some and no matter how big or small; they were nice. This year was all about Jesus, and Giving. I though about one of my favorite bible verses.

All the way up to Christmas I concentrated on Mary. I thought about all she went though. I thought about her faith. Joseph was about to put her away, but she stood faithful to God. She didn't have all the comforts that are alloted to most women giving birth. Yet she pondered things in her heart. I found myself pondering things in my heart. Guess what, I may never be comfortable. I wasn't comfortable when I truly found Jesus. I stood on his words and I had what I needed. One of which was love thy neighbor. People aren't always lovable, but it's all in learning to give.

I spent this Christmas with a couple that isn't able to get around much anymore. We prepared a nice dinner and opened presents. They enjoyed watching the game, a bible story on the history channel, and talking. It was nice to get away from things and give of myself. In my pondering, I really found the meaning of Christmas. Give something good. God gave his only begotten son. I could never stand up to that, but I can celebrate it with people who would otherwise be alone. It's not that they have no one. It's just that this time of year everyone is spreading themselves thin. They have their primary family and extended family. By the time a person reaches 90 years old, you become an extendion of the family. They see their families on Christmas eve or a couple days before. This was the best Christmas ever, because the best present is giving, What is better then giving of yourself. After all Jesus gave himself.

It all started December 4, I hurried to get my hair and nails done for the christmas party, at church sunday. I looked around me and everyone was in a hurry, too. As I got ready to go the temperature dropped. This is what I woke up to on thursday.

We turned on the television, only to hear that some had lost power-no heat, lights, etc. I started to pray and thank God for all I had. I still had lights, heat, etc. St. Schlastica Retreat Center could probably take in quite a few families if need be. Then I started to notice; no one was complaining. No one I talked to, no one on television. Those who believed probably prayed for those who didn't believe, as well as for themselves. All of a sudden I started to see God grace. My friend has a tree branch come through her roof. She never complained. She likes to write her prayers out, and that is what she spent the day doing. Another lady lived about 45 miles away. Just about the whole town had lost power. When she called back she was sad, but she never complained.
My Grandmother use to say children should be trained in the way they should go. She believed that if they strayed, they would return. All the people i'm talking about, never once complained. Whether they lost hours at work or had to do doubles; never complained. They all called on Jesus. I was stuck in the house for 4 days. I had plenty of time to reflect. What God showed me was in times like this, people find him and they are able to put their feelings aside and find each other. Thank Jesus for once again another insight. Now, the weatherman said we would get more snow tonight. I can't help but wonder what God is going to show me this time.

Thanksgiving with The Simpkins

This year I was invited out for thanksgivings. It was such a blessing. I heard the most wonderful blessing over the food, I had ever heard. Maybe I just payed more attention, because it came from a 90 year old. I have the pleasure of spending time with a couple who have been married for 70 years. They taught sunday school for over 50 years. What a blessing.

The family wanted to capture this moment, because it might not happen again. When Mr. Simpkins began to bless the table, 2 members recorded it with their cellphones. It wasn't' Father thank you for this food we are about to recieve. It was every bit of 5 minutes. Any other time everyone would be upset at having cellphones out at the table. What came across my mind was just how many tables had Mr. Simpkins blessed. there's 365 days in a year; do the math. It came so naturally. He was talking to his father and friend. I could tell that he has a relationship with our heavenly father, and this was a continous conversation that goes on all during the day.

His wife tells a story, that they never missed church for any reason unless they were sick, until recently. They don't get out much anymore. What dedication. Every once in a while Mrs. Simpkins still has sunday school in her home. She tells a story that she couldn't have taught sunday school without the presence of the Holy Spirit. She talked about preparing herself though reading scripture and fasting. It's a blessing to be in the presence of Elders. Thank you Jesus for the saints before, now, and after me. I pray that you use me for years to come, just as you did Mr and Mrs. Simpkins.

All week long I've been thinking about the importance of God in your life, family, and friends. I have a friend I met through volunteer work. She is in her 70's and devoted her whole life to serving God. We both like to sew. She told me one day that there was this program that she didn't want to get in because she didn't want to hurt anyone. I got to thinking: if it have not been for people like her, I would have left church a long time ago. I would have settled to worship in my house. I've been praying about this for some time. When people first enter the church they are babes in faith. Their not ready for strong food, they are still drinking milk. We have to rely on the spirit to guide us, so we can guide them. There was a time when I almost left the church, because of criticism, rude remarks, etc. God had his hand on me and I kept coming back, but I have seem people just walk away. I always tell people to pursue scripture and your life will illustrate the fruits.

Good-morning, afternoon, or evening-what ever time of day it is; may it be blessed and used to glorify God. Everyday I weak up and seek God's will, just like so many others. This time God uses my senses. He causes me to hear-listen for him- in everything. Step out in faith from what I cannot see, and believe. He said I want you to stop talking so much and be a good listener. Then use the words I give you.

Just the other day I received bad news on the telephone. God said pay very close attention and you will have the answer. She went into her problem and I listened, then I said a few word and that calmed her. To make a long story short, God showed me that listening is very important. I listened to her and I listened to God. Lest I say God blessed 2 people, who were ready to give up. The lady told me today that God is good all the time. The other person was talking about suicide and before the day was over, was about to smile. He said you really pray. I said no we prayed.

After all way over I started to ponder. A word that God spoke to me more than once, as I sat and thought about these people and how I have been in there shoes. I looked up the word ponder in my concordance. Almost 20 years ago I met a lady who was very obedient to God. She came to my house with The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance Of The Bible. I was just a baby christian, so I looked at it and was amazed at all the words, and said thank you. Now when the Lord gives me a word; my eyes go straight to it. I found the word ponder in two places.

Proverbs 4:26 Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established.

Proverbs 5:6 Lest you ponder her path of life-Her ways are unstable; You do not know them.

All the Lord ask me to do is LISTEN, be OBEDIENT, and BELIEVE. Need I say everyone received a blessing. Please listen for God today. It may be through someone, something, or directly to you. When you hear him use that experience to glorify him. Thanks to everyone who prayed for me; I heard him. A friend said to me one day," nothing is wasted. Everything-trade, experience- you will eventually use." Amen.

The lady I helped, I could not judge because I had been somewhat where she is. Needless, to say there were some areas that seemed a little gray. My blessing is I don't have to understand, for God to use me. He understands.
Humble Orthodoxy by Joshua Harris

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">Joshua
Harris got the idea to write on the subject humble orthodoxy from a specking
engagement that he did on the subject. At first it would only be a chapter in
his book Dug Down Deep. After he got
so much response on the topic he decided to partnership with Eric Stanford to
write a book on it. Stanford used the chapter on humble orthodoxy from the book
along with Harris’s sermons to create this book, complete with a study guide.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">The
definition Harris gives for orthodoxy is, “right thinking about God. It’s about
teaching and belief based on the established, proven, cherished truths of the
faith.” These are the basis for Christianity such as: There is only one God. He
is triune; the father, son, and Holy Spirit. His only begotten son, Jesus is our savior. He was born of a virgin, etc. According to Harris the word orthodoxy
sometimes gets a bad rap when people use it as a tool to reprimand. Harris questions if, “good doctrine
necessarily lead to being argumentative, annoying, and arrogant?” He makes it very clear if we are going
to teach like Jesus, then we need to love like Jesus. This is why we need to
humble ourselves. Mean spirited
people teaching the word of Christ; have been the reason so many leave the
church. Harris is able to parallel’s these types of attitudes to the ones of
the Pharisees in his day. We need
a equal portion of both humbling and orthodoxy, “ We must care deeply about
truth, and we must also defend and share this truth with compassion and
humility.” Stanford intergraded
scripture along with stories in the discussion. This is the perfect book for a
discussion group.

attack. He has not been healthy for years, addressing a stream of surgeries.
Barrett dies as a result, which brings the family together. They haven't been
close in years, each suffering their personal turmoil. It wasn't until the
funeral when each of the sibling got a chance to speak about their father; they
could see that he wanted them to be a family. The book is really centered
around the life of journalist Ellen Barrett, but Kingsbury finds a way to
journey and entwine the lives of her siblings: Jane, Amy, Megan, and Aaron.
This story was a good reminder of the old saying; You don't know where you're
going until you know where you've been. Grounded in good spirituality, this
book is a must read.

young woman in her twenties, Maggie Stovall, who is a journalist for the
Cleveland Gazette newspaper. Maggie appears to really have it pulled together.
She is married to the love of her life, Ben Stovall. Ben is a successful lawyer
at a law firm. They are portrayed as having high christian morals. Since they
couldn't have any children of their own, they became foster parents to Casey
and Cameron. The boys were seven years old twins. Everything looked really good
from the outside. Except Karen has a secret that has been eating at her for
about seven year, and one day Karen broke all the way down, which lands her in
Orchards Psychiatric Hospital. This is where Karen begins to open up and come
from behind her mask.

Ben finds out who he really is. He has held everyone to such high expectations-
that it could have been what drove Maggie to feel that if he knew her dirty
little secret, he wouldn't want her anymore. Did Maggie really pay attention to
what Ben was saying or did she hear what she wanted to hear? In his search to
find out what has driven his wife to this point, Ben realizes that he really
loves Maggie for who she is. At this point he is willing to except what he
finds out. Maggie Stovall represents so many people plagued by depression and
forced to live in a world that may not understand that it strikes christians
too. Thanks Karen for taking on this subject in hopes of helping others
understand what it is like to live with depression. Most of all things for

Today I woke up feeling mundane; a word that the Holy Spirit put in my spirit. why? I didn't know how to describe my feelings this morning. This is a word that I don't commonly use so I googled it. According to Dictionary.com, the definition for mundane:

of or pertaining to this world or earth as contrasted with heaven; worldly; earthly: mundane affairs.

common; ordinary; banal; unimaginative.

of or pertaining to the world, universe, or earth.

Now I know that I felt this way because I would be meditating on the life of Jesus as a teenager. I want a closer relationship with Jesus, and since he came to earth and walked in human form; I wanted to know what it must have been like for him. I don't know about you, but for me being a teenager was hard. What I got from my time with Jesus this morning was to fellowship with my heavenly father at all times. Discuss every aspect of my life with him. This will keep me on tract with the things I need to do to continue living a christian life.

I used Luke 2:51-52 from The New American Bible, "51 He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus advanced [in] wisdom and age and favor before God and man." I must state here that this isn't the only passage I used during the last few weeks to get to know Jesus. It's the one that drew things together for me. The majority of verses came from Luke. What I discovered was a very human Jesus that came down from heaven to save us and along the way showed examples.

I don't usually use background music, but today I did. The Gregorian Melodies Popular Chants-my introduction to Benedictine Monks- brought the spirit of Jesus that I always feel when I enter church.
Today I visited blogs in my circle. Many had scripture and I got the message. Then I went to youtube; start looking through gospel artist. I see this video, "Jesus" by LeAndria Johnson. I had never heard of her before today. You may ask where have I been? Everything in God's timing brothers and sisters. While listening to this video, I started thinking just how many times have I called on the name of Jesus. I thank Jesus, ask for blessings, and pray to him. How many times have you called on Jesus.

Hodgson manages to draw her reader into the story line using the language, details, and actual places of the times. Cripple Creek is a fairly new community where most of the settler’s fled west in hopes of a better life. Twice A Bride is the last novel in the Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek series. The first three books are centered on the arrival of the Sinclair sisters. Hodgson brought back Willow Peterson-sister-in-law of Ida Sinclair-Raines for her protagonist.

The story starts with Peterson in a state of shock after losing a husband and father. She is looking for a fresh start without wanting to be a burden on anyone. The one thing Peterson has on her side is that she is an artist, through her craft she meets a new photographer in town, Trenton Van Der Veer, and romance sparks. From this union Peterson starts her own business, Portraits by Willow. The reader will be introduced or reunited with the Sinclair sisters and other town’s people as they interact in each other’s lives. Hodgson portrays a God fearing community with God interacting in the lives of each character.

This is an excellent book for group study, because at the end of the book there is a reader’s guide. The guide is equipped with 10 situations and questions pertaining to the situations. The book is equipped with bible verses and appropriate Christian etiquette. The author’s notes at the end of the book discuss the real life people and places in the series. I enjoyed reading this book: it was an easy read. I look forward to reading other books by Mona Hodgson.
I received a copy free from Waterbook Multnamah in exchange for my honest review.
